City Styles ideas - How about a "cottage Neighborhood"?
At one recent Planning Commission meeting some discussion revolved around different designs and styles for Tangent's future. Some thought it would be too limiting and others thought it might help to identify Tangent more. There was mention of the things that make Tangent unique like the railroad - part of what gave Tangent its name. One idea for dense growth that incorporates open space is the Cottage Neighborhood, such as the one shown here in Redmond Washington. It was highlighted in the March 2006 issue of Sunset Magazine.
What are your thoughts?

I remember seeing this article in Sunset Magazine and thinking that this might be something for Tangent to look into. It said that the houses could be small, even close together but because they shared the open space, like a big park in the middle, and sidewalks connected all the houses, it didn't seem like a typical development. It didn't allow for people to park however (I think they parked in a common lot) but I am sure it could be adapted with have alley ways or a road behind the houses. Seems like a great idea!
If a city has to have mixed development, low and high income, this seems like a choice I'd rather have than an apartment or manufactured home.
Thanks
Cottage Style, cluster housing, and other arrangements put houses closer together on smaller lots but the trade off is open space surrounding these clusters. As to Cottage Style, I like it. One concern for us in a rainy area is getting groceries from a detached garage at one end of the cluster. One design would have a drive to the back side of the houses with garage. The incovenience of detached garage could be overcome by haveing a covered golf cart to get back and forth. Also, in this scenario, I could have a public side of my house facing the center court and private side that faced into field or forest as my tranquil side.
